We would like to end this article with a small compilation of different statements on the importance of Kirtana. For a more elaborate explanation on the art of chanting see the article Kirtana-Rasa.
"In this age the spiritual revolution was recommended by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He demonstrated that the Yuga Dharma for this age is the Sankirtana chanting of the holy names. If we want the degraded mass of people to be elevated, we must stop their sinful activity. To stop sinful activity one must purify the mind and the best process for purifying the mass mind is the chanting of the maha mantra Hare Krishna. This can be done in public where everyone has a chance to hear and be purified ."
(Letter to Swami Jara Kumar 1974)
"Because of the presence of the Lord in the form of the transcendental vibration, the Vaikuntha atmosphere is evoked. This atmosphere is without fear and anxiety. One living entity does not fear another. By hearing the holy names and glories of the Lord, a person executes pious activities. Srnvatah sva-kathah krsnah punya-sravana-kirtanah (SB 1.2.17). Thus his material hankerings immediately stop. This sankirtana movement started by the Society for Krishna Consciousness is meant for creating Vaikuntha, the transcendental world that is without anxiety, even in this material world. The method is the propagation of the sravanam kirtanam process throughout the world. In the material world everyone is envious of his fellow man. Animalistic
envy exists in human society as long as there is no performance of sankirtana-yajna, the chanting of the holy names-Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare . The Pracetäs therefore decided to remain always in the society of devotees, and they considered that to be the highest benediction possible in human life."
(SB 4.30.35)
"Therefore, the best performance of yajna given to us is the sankirtana-yajna.Yajnaih sankirtana-prayair
yajanti hi sumedhasah (SB 11.5.32). Those who are intelligent take advantage of the greatest yajna in this age by chanting the Hare Krsna maha-mantra in congregation. When the Hare Krsna mantra is chanted by many men together, the chanting is called sankirtana, and as a result of such a yajna there will be clouds in the sky (yajnad bhavati parjanyah [Bg. 3.14]). In these days of drought, people can gain relief from scarcity of rain and food by the simple method of the Hare Krsna yajna. Indeed, this can relieve all of human society. At present there are droughts throughout Europe and America, and people are suffering, but if people take this Krsna consciousness movement seriously, if they stop their sinful activities and chant the Hare Krsna maha-mantra, all their problems will be solved without difficulty."
(SB 9.1.17)
"The principle of chanting is to glorify the Lord and not to attract a crowd . If Krishna hears nicely then he will ask some sincere devotee to gather in such place."
(Letter to Brahmananda 1967)
"These boys, they are going with kirtana party. Because they are Krsna conscious, it is not that they are sitting idly in this temple. They are going outside, preaching this philosophy so that others may take advantage of it. So a Krsna conscious person cannot sit idly. He thinks that such a nice philosophy of life, why it should not be distributed. That is his mission."
(Lecture BG 1969)
"I am so glad that your Kirtana is driving away the Mayavadi philosophers from that part of the country, and Haridvar and Hrsikesa are full of impersonalists. If you can drive them away by your vibration of Hari Kirtana, Krishna will be so much pleased and Lord Caitanya will shower His blessings upon you."
(Letter to Harivilasa 1968)
"Similarly there are sahajiyäs, they also say that kirtana is not required for them. Kirtana, one who has very much advanced, he doesn't require to chant Hare Krsna. I have heard it . But the [break]
...begins from kirtana. Sravanam kirtanah visnoh [SB 7.5.23]. Sastra says, kirtaniyah sada harih [Cc. Adi 17.31].
harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam
kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha
[Cc. Adi 17.21]
So in this age, especially in Kali-yuga, one who does not join in the kirtana, he's not a devotee at all . He's outside, bahir anga, bahir-artha-maninah. This sravana kirtana is the first business of devotee. Sravanam kirtanah visnoh [SB 7.5.23]. Those who are actually devotees... Caitanya Mahaprabhu always engaged in kirtana. He advised, kirtaniyah sada harih [Cc. Adi 17.31]. It is not that one who is advanced, he hasn't, hasn't got to take part in kirtana. That is nonsense. Sada. Sada means always, whether you are advanced or not advanced . Kirtaniyah sada harih. Sravanam, sravanam kirtanam. Kirtana, as, unless one hears, how he can... Kirtana also... Speaking (is) also kirtana. But unless one is hea..., hearing, how he can speak? Sravanam kirtanam visnoh smaranam päda-sevanam arcanam... [SB 7.5.23].
These are nine different processes, and our Gaudiya Vaisnava sampradäya, following the footsteps of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, their principal business is this kirtana, hari-kirtana: Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna... Kirtanad eva krsnasya. It is in Bhagavata, it is said: kirtanad eva krsnasya mukta-sangah param vrajet. Unless one is enthusiastic in sravanam kirtana, especially kirtana..., kirtanad eva krsnaasya... There are... Talking of Krsna, that is also kirtana. But especially for the general... For everyone. Why general? Everyone. Caitanya Mahaprabhu-who can be more advanced than Caitanya Mahaprabhu?-He was daily joining in kirtana. Four hours daily at Jagannatha Puré temple. It was a regular program. Not only that: He organized four parties, four parties, sixteen men in each party. So the four parties in four directions, they'll perform kirtana, and in every party Caitanya Mahaprabhu seemed to be, He's present in every party. That was another opulence of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. So He has recommended,
trnad api sunacena
taror api sahisnuna
amanina manadena
kirtaniyah sada harih
[Cc. Adi 17.31]
One should be very tolerant and humble and giving respect to anyone, not expecting any respect for oneself. Such person can chant Hare Krsna maha-mantra sada, always. Kirtaniyah sada harih."
(NOD Lecture 1973)
"Anyway, I understand that Mukunda is leading now a nice Kirtana party in the streets, and there is good response. The time is fast approaching when we will have to perform such public Kirtana in all the important cities of the world."
(Letter to Gurudasa 1968)
"My advice to you under the circumstances is that at least for one hour you must all go to have Sankirtana outside on the streets or in the park. That is your life and soul, first business. The
next business is completing the chanting of 16 rounds every day. The next business is your editing, and if you find extra time, then you can attend the temple ceremonies. Otherwise you can stop these
activities, but outdoor kirtana, your editing work and chanting of 16 rounds must be done. Outdoor kirtana must be done, even at the cost of suspending all editorial work. That is your first and
foremost
business. Temple worship is not so important. If need be, the whole temple can be locked, but the outdoor kirtana cannot be stopped."
(Letter to Rayarama 1969)
"Practicing is already done by kirtana. It is not required for us to become artists. Our main point is service to Krishna, not to please an audience. We shall not divert our attention too much to adjustment of musical sounds. People should not misunderstood that we are a band of musical artists. They must know that we are devotees of Krishna. Our devotional practice and purity shall be so strong that wherever we chant there will be immediately an impression in the audience for devotion to Krishna."
(Letter to Tamal Krsna 1969)
"Lord Caitanya instructed us to be more humble than the grass on the street, and more tolerant than the trees, and to offer all respects to all, demanding no respect for ourselves. All these nice qualifications make one worthy to chant Hare Krishna. Just try to follow these principles and keep staunch faith in Krishna and in Spiritual Master, and your life will be successful without any doubt.
Regarding Kirtana Party: My idea is that at least one dozen persons should form a Kirtana Party. Two persons play mrdangas, eight persons play karatalas, one person playing tamboura, and one person playing melodious harmonium. The person who will play on tamboura will be leader singer. You have just calculated what I want, when you suggest that the leader should sing as I do, and the others will respond. That will be very nice. But all the members of the party will be pure devotees. None of them should be outsiders. We do not want any outsiders as far as possible. Mrdanga playing as you are doing at present will make you more and more expert as you go on playing. Here also I see Gaurasundara simply by playing is improving. If all the members keep their faith in Krishna and tries to please Him, certainly everyone will be pleased by hearing our Kirtana. It is sure and certain. When such Kirtana will be demonstrated, only the harmonium player may sit, and all the others may stand up and join the Kirtana and dancing properly dressed."
(Letter to Hansadutta 1968)
"I am very much ambitious for leading a Kirtana party, especially all over your state, and Europe. Hamsaduta is trying to organize this party. If you can move with this Kirtana party, say a batch of 12 to 15 heads, all over the States, as well as Europe, I am sure we will be more popular than the so-called yogi Maharishi Mahesa ."
(Letter to Brahmananda 1968)
"Regarding your request for a kirtana musician, we don't require anyone who is very musically talented. Here in New Vrindaban Hayagriva has organized very nice kirtana party, and they are singing and chanting thrice daily very, very nicely. So I think you are the best mrdanga player, and similarly you have Rsi Kumar, Madhusudana, Uddhava, as well as others, so if you think all of you are deficient, I can send you a tape recording teaching playing techniques, and you will learn from this. You have got another devotee, Mohini Mohan, Purusottama's friend, and Purusottama says he is a musical master, so utilize the talent you have got and surely your propaganda will be successful and more men will come. It is in the same way that I came here with only one pair of cymbals, and now there are hundreds of cymbals going on. So Krishna will send us men; gradually as we qualify ourselves everything will come."
(Letter to Brahmananda 1969)
"I am very pleased to note that there are some nice boys and girls who are joining you at kirtana. Try to show them the importance of our movement, and the best way of doing this is by Sankirtana.
Here in Columbus we had a very big meeting at the Ohio State University and more than one thousand students were chanting and dancing along with us. So there is very good potential for spreading our
movement amongst the college students, and if we simply present them with the opportunity of chanting with us, and then we lecture on Bhagavad-gita As It Is, then surely many intelligent
people will become attracted. So Sankirtana Party in the streets and Sankirtana Party in school engagements should be our chief business. This will assure success in our propaganda activities."
(Letter to Ananda 1968)
"I am very glad that Krishna is already dictating you how to make perfect the SANKIRTANA party. I completely agree with you about the program of our traveling across the country, being booked in several places. And I am glad that our friend, Allen Ginsberg, is helping you. There is no doubt about our success if we can make this Kirtana party successful. The most important point in this connection is that we shall never be professional; that is to say, we shall try to make the Kirtana party perfect from the point of view of Krishna Consciousness. The idea of introducing Panca-tattva in the kirtana party was also contemplated by me. Not only that, we have to prepare different dresses for Radha and Krishna, and Their eight confidential Associates, Sakhis. Sometimes you have to dress somebody as Nrsimhadeva and Prahlada; in this way, we shall have varieties of show along with the kirtana, and all the varieties will be picked up from Srimad-Bhagavatam and Bhagavad-gita. We have to teach the Brahmacaris and the Brahmacarinis to speak in Sanskrit some of the verses in this connection, and we explain the verses by singing, chanting, and speaking also. Sometimes in the middle of chanting and singing, we shall speak also. So, all these varieties show will be so attractive with melodious musical sounds, and above all our good behavior and advanced Krishna Consciousness, will make this show very successful. In the meantime, you train the Kirtana party as you are doing, and the responsive method is all perfect. I have already written you in my last letter in this connection, and again I say that the responsive method should be practiced. There may be more than one singer, just like you may take the leader's seat, sometimes Jaya Govinda may take the leader's seat, sometimes others may take the leader's seat, but the method of chanting and responding, then chanting, should always be followed . When I come to New York certainly we shall devise plans on this touring program, not only traveling within the States, but also traveling all over the world. And when we go to India in course of our travel, we shall collect some Indian devotees also to join us. Not only Indian, we shall gradually collect devotees from all over the world without any discrimination. Our Krishna Consciousness movement must be all-pervading, as Krishna is all-pervading."
(Letter to Hansadutta 1968)
"I am very pleased to learn of our success in Yugoslavia. When there is a little hope of success in these countries, it encourages me 100 times more than in other places. If they take up this Krishna Consciousness, they'll take it very seriously. This is the perfection of Communist ideology. Everything belongs to God. No private proprietorship. They have gone on the radio, that means they have purified the whole atmosphere. That is the way to introduce, the transcendental sound vibration will act. Utilize this approach. Gradually try to convince them that this movement is the perfection of Communism. Go on singing Krsna kirtana. That is our program. Caitanya Mahaprabhu used to go out chanting. He never spoke philosophy in public, only among higher circles. The chanting is very effective . Along with tampura and mrdanga played very rhythmically let them chant. Perform this musical demonstration and sell books as far as possible, and feasting. Then everything will be successful. It is good that they do not like these bogus yogis and they like Hare Krsna mantra. Give them the chance to chant the Hare Krsna maha mantra somehow or other, then very soon good results will be visible."
(Letter to Harikesa 1976)
"Indeed, their effulgence is like the brilliance of a million suns. Nor have I ever heard the Lord's names chanted so melodiously.
PURPORT
Such are the symptoms of pure devotees when they are chanting. All the pure devotees are as bright as sunshine, and their bodily luster is very effulgent. In addition, their performance of saìkértana is unparalleled. There are many professional chanters who can perform congregational chanting with various musical instruments in an artistic and musical way, but their chanting cannot be as attractive as the congregational chanting of pure devotees. If a devotee sticks strictly to the principles governing Vaiñëava behavior, his bodily luster will naturally be attractive, and his singing and chanting of the holy names of the Lord will be effective. People will appreciate such kértana without hesitation. Even dramas about the pastimes of Lord Caitanya or Çré Kåñëa should be played by devotees. Such dramas will immediately interest an audience and be full of potency. The students of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness should note these two points and try to apply these principles in their spreading of the Lord's glories."
(C.C Madhya 11.95)
"I am very happy to hear you are making nice arrangements for the Kirtana Party; I am anxious to see the idea take shape ."
(Letter Hansadutta 1968)
Please chant
Hare Krsna Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare,
Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.
And be happy!!!
